Defeat the Addiction not the Patient

Many experts on drug addiction advise that addiction is not a disease but a symptom of something much deeper. Treating the patient like an addict or an alcoholic, who is powerless over the overwhelming urge to use, defeats the patient not the addiction. Experts now believe that it is important to treat the patient with in depth counseling getting to the core of the issue and not just teaching them how to “manage” one day at a time as an addict or alcoholic. This treatment can best take place at a drug abuse rehab center.

Some of the most common fundamental problems or causes of drug or alcohol abuse are:

  • ADD or ADHD
  • Anxiety
  • Chemical imbalance
  • Depression
  • Depression
  • Dysfunctional family/turmoil
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of purpose
  • Low self esteem
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Molestation
  • Physical pain
  • Trauma

In depth counseling aimed at healing the underlying issue enables for the achievement of emotional strength and growth and aids in bringing patient recovery.

Addictions cause life to spiral out of control

The patient who is trying to balance their life issues while dealing with an overwhelming desire to misuse drugs or alcohol finds their life soon spiraling out of control. It may affect their family life, relationships, financial and emotional stability, and ability to maintain gainful employment. Drugs and alcohol not only plays a huge part in injuries and deaths related to traffic incidents, but in the work place. Excessive and chronic alcohol consumption causes many serious health issues; liver disease, cancer, heart attacks, and brain damage; just to name a few. Alcohol and drug abuse can not only trigger diseases but compound those that are contracted by the patient as they contribute to the patient making poor health choices, malnutrition, and participating in at risk behavior.

Women who abuse substances are victims of violence more often than those who do not

They are at an even higher risk of partaking in activities which endanger their safety and welfare as their judgment is impaired and their self-esteem lowered. Many more women who abuse substances or alcohol become victims of violence than those who do not. It becomes a vicious cycle which can stop with drug abuse rehab.
