Roses are lovely and preferable flowers for every occasion especially when they are in their full bloom. Nevertheless, how beautiful the roses are, they tend to become lackluster, unattractive and start to droop just after a few days. You could actually use them to make a jar of beautiful potpourri for your house instead of throwing them away. To pick fresh roses for a potpourri, just pick them when they are at their peak in a pleasant smell, meaning that they are about halfway open.

To display the finished product of potpourri, red roses are the best since they became a deep burgundy color when they are dried. Pink and white roses appear to be less attractive when they are dried as they will turn brown.
To make a potpourri, the first thing to do is to dry the rose petals. On a tray, scatter the petals and leave them in a dry, cool place but avoid exposing them to moisture. They should feel brittle and no longer leathery when they are completely dried.
In order to preserve and protect the petals, you should spray them with fixative. Additionally, you can add scents to the petals that will complement the scent of your roses. Cloves, citrus peels and vanilla beans are some great choices. Then, add several drops of rose essential oil to the roses. This way, it can help enhance the natural rose oils in your potpourri.
Next, put the potpourri mixture in one sealed container and shake it to thoroughly mix it well. Let the potpourri sits there for about 10 days so that the scents can be better blended and settled. To distribute the scents throughout the mixture evenly, shake it every other day.
Remember to remove the potpourri from the sealed container and transfer it to a decorative container, jar or bowl after 10 days later. Now, you can display your final product of potpourri in your house. Enjoy its fragrance! (Tips: To retain its fragrance, add rose essential oils once every 14 days).
