We all need to pay tribute to an English doctor who called himself Dr. Edward Jenner (1749-1823). He was a doctor who lived in Gloucestershire, England who found an effective way of preventing smallpox via vaccination.

At that moment, the smallpox was a scary and common killer disease that took away many innocent lives, especially the lives of younger children and infants. There was almost no recovery for smallpox at that time.

Dr. Edward Jenner injected people with a mild disease of cowpox. Afterwards their systems built immunity and were able to fight smallpox. He carried out a daring experiment by inoculating a young boy with pus taken from a milkmaid with cowpox in 1796. He then coined the word vaccination for his treatment and subsequently succeeded in vaccinating more people including his own son, and thereby proving the effectiveness of his treatment beyond all doubt and assumptions. People who were inoculated with the cowpox were finally able to become immune to smallpox.

Due to the contribution of Dr. Edward Jenner’s stupendous discovery and observation, the smallpox was gradually eradicated and by 1980, the world was officially declared free from the threats of the smallpox.
